Pamukkale ("Cotton Castle" in Turkish) is a natural UNESCO World Heritage site in southwestern Turkey, famous for its terraced white travertine pools formed by calcium-rich thermal waters flowing down the hillside. At the top of the travertines sits the ancient Greco-Roman city of Hierapolis, with ruins including a 12,000-seat theatre and one of Turkey's best archaeological museums.
Bathing in the main white terraces is strictly regulated — visitors may walk barefoot through designated shallow pools only. For a full swimming experience, the Antique Pool (Cleopatra's Pool) inside the Hierapolis archaeological park charges a separate entry fee and allows swimming among ancient Roman columns submerged by an earthquake.
Most visitors spend a full day — 2–3 hours on the terraces and pools, and 2 hours exploring Hierapolis, the theatre, and the necropolis. Arriving early (before 09:00) or late afternoon gives you the terraces without the midday crowds and better light for photography.
The nearest airport is Denizli-Çardak (DNZ), served by Turkish Airlines and Pegasus from Istanbul, with the flight taking about 1 hour. From Denizli city it is 20 km to Pamukkale by taxi or minibus. By bus from Istanbul, the overnight journey takes 9–10 hours. Pamukkale also makes a good extension from Ephesus (2.5 hours by road).
