Sümela Monastery: Visiting the Cliff Monastery of Trabzon (2026/2027)

Sümela is a 1,600-year-old Greek Orthodox monastery built into a sheer cliff face about 300 metres above the Altındere valley, 45 km south of Trabzon on Türkiye's Black Sea coast. Founded by tradition in AD 386, it is the North's most spectacular sight and pairs naturally with Uzungöl and the Ayder highlands.

What makes Sümela special?

The audacity of it: chapels, kitchens, monk cells and a sacred spring stacked into a natural rock hollow halfway up a cliff, reached by a forest path and stone stairs. The Rock Church's frescoes — Christ Pantocrator, the Virgin, scenes from Genesis — layer five centuries of painting on the cave walls.

How to get there

Fly Istanbul to Trabzon in about two hours, then drive 45 km (roughly one hour) into Altındere National Park. From the gate, park shuttles and a 15–20 minute uphill walk bring you to the monastery. On our Black Sea tour the same day includes a tea-estate stop and Trabzon's own Hagia Sophia.

Best time to visit

May to October is the season; the monastery is open year-round but mountain weather turns fast. The famous Black Sea mist (sis) is part of the drama — some of the most unforgettable views are of the monastery floating above the clouds.

Is Sümela Monastery open to visitors?

Yes — it reopened after a long restoration and operates daily in season; occasional sections may close for ongoing work. Entry is ticketed, with shuttles from the park gate.

How hard is the walk?

A steady 15–20 minute forest climb plus stairs inside. Anyone reasonably mobile manages it; allow more time in rain.

Can I combine it with Uzungöl in one day?

Possible but rushed. An overnight in Uzungöl or the highlands turns a checklist into an actual holiday — that's how our 4-day route is built.
