What to see in the old town

One long main street and a labyrinth of stepped lanes: the Great Mosque's fluted minaret, madrasa terraces like Zinciriye and Kasımiye, silver filigree (telkâri) workshops, and soap and almond-candy shops in the bazaar. Every rooftop café ends the day with the same show — the plain of Mesopotamia dissolving into haze.

Deyrulzafaran & the Syriac heritage

Twenty minutes east stands the saffron-stoned Deyrulzafaran, a working Syriac Orthodox monastery since the 5th century and long the seat of its Patriarchate. Services are still sung in Aramaic — the language's living echo. Midyat, an hour away, adds mansion-lined lanes and the Mor Gabriel area.
