What exactly is Göbekli Tepe?

It is a complex of massive T-shaped limestone pillars — some 5.5 metres tall and carved with foxes, snakes, boars and vultures — arranged in circles by people who had not yet invented pottery, writing or farming. Its discovery overturned the belief that organised religion came after agriculture; here, the temple appears to have come first.

How to get there from Istanbul

Fly Istanbul to Şanlıurfa (GNY) in about two hours, then drive 30 minutes to the site. There is no practical rail or bus alternative worth your time. Best time to visit

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer warm, clear days. July and August regularly exceed 40°C on the exposed hilltop — visit at opening time if you come in summer. The site is open year-round and the canopy shades the main enclosures.
